We’re all falling in love with Woo Young-woo, but what makes the show Extraordinary Attorney Woo so special?

Everyone is talking about Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix and it’s clear why. This K-drama is funny and interesting with lots of heart. Keep reading to find out the 3 things we love about this show here at Britcent!

1. The gang!

First of all, we love the characters! They’re fantastic and make you feel like you’re hanging out with friends. Let’s take a closer look at this amazing team.

Myung-seok

Isn’t he just the perfect leader? Myung-seok is calm, kind, supportive and empathetic. Although he doubts Young-woo at first, he’s quick to realise how special she is.

Jun-ho

Who else would dance with you through a revolving door? Jun-ho’s not just popular for his looks! He’s the kind of person who genuinely cares about people and doesn’t turn a blind eye when someone needs help…

Min-woo

He’s the troublemaker and the schemer…but every team needs one of these guys, right? And even though Min-woo might cause problems, he comes through in the end.

Su-yeon

A beautiful person inside and out. Although Su-yeon sometimes loses patience with Young-woo, they’re a great team! Su-yeon butters up the judge while Young-woo gets ready to make her argument.

2. The courtroom!

So, the characters are great, but so is the setting! Legal dramas are lots of fun because they have a perfect formula—it’s one team against the other and there is a puzzle to solve. Who will find the right answer first? At the same time this can get boring. What’s different about Extraordinary Attorney Woo is that us Brits get to see South Korean law in action!

3. The representation!

Yet the most amazing thing about Extraordinary Attorney Woo isn’t the characters, or the legal drama. It’s how it shows the realities of living with autism. It’s easy to only show autistic people as awkward geniuses who are able to process huge amounts of information. Sometimes Young-woo is like a computer, rapidly searching her memory for the fact that will win the day. But we know autism isn’t a superpower.

The show knows this too and it’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking. It’s heartwarming when we see Young-woo overcome challenges. But we also see her father struggle because he can’t connect with his daughter. We see other severely autistic characters that face greater challenges than even Young-woo.

This show is a window into life with autism. It helps us to think about people who have different experiences from us. And, more importantly, it lets people living with autism see characters with their condition on a show where they are accepted, appreciated and achieving amazing things! You go, Woo Young-woo!

With this in mind, it’s no surprise that Extraordinary Attorney Woo has become so popular all over the world and especially here at Britcent.
